SSDs… This extraordinary invention that changed our computers! They have become bigger, cheaper and faster. Most SSDs on the market are in a 2.5 inch form factor. Imagine a way smaller HDD. Well, the technology moved forward (as expected) and now we can buy M.2 MVME SSDs. They are even smaller than a classic SSD and way faster. But there’s a trick. Before checking your computer (with a dedicated software – Aida64, Speccy, Everest etc), make sure you actually have that PCI-E on your motherboard. I was in the awkward position where Speccy told me there is a PCI-E on the motherboard, I have purchased an M2 SSD and once I wanted to connect it… Surprise! There was no compatible PCI-E slot with the M2 NVME SSD I had in my hand. Of course, I had to return it and get a classic 2.5 inch SSD. Once again, make sure you have the right slot on your motherboard and physically check for it.
Now let’s talk more about the Samsung MZ-V7E1T0BW SSD. Comparing to a standard 2.5 inch one, the model we are reviewing today is way faster. What does that’s mean? A standard SSD can reach write and read speeds up to 600 Mb/s. That’s amazing, comparing to a regular HDD, that can’t go up more than 120-140 Mb/s. But we are talking about a NVME SSD here and this particular model can go up to 3500 Mb/s read and 2500 Mb/s write. That’s outrageously fast! But it’s real and right in front of you! I have both standard 2.5 inch and M2 SSDs in my computer. The difference is pretty big and sometimes justified.
As a basic/regular computer user, paying more for a faster M2 SSD… Not worth it! But if you’re into video/3D editing/rendering, the Samsung MZ-V7E1T0BW model is a must! Baby steps… If you don’t have an SSD, first you should get a regular one and after one year or two you should upgrade to a compact M2 NVME SSD.
